Hello again,

After having experienced a load of whiring and clanking, a visit to the garage and some great help from Landyzone, I have established I have the VCU/IRD problem going on.

To temporarily remove the issue I removed the propshaft this afternoon which has eased the problem however, there is still a bit of a whiring noise and not perfectly smooth handling, which makes me feel uneasy.

Would a damaged IRD still be causing this or should that have gone away when the propshaft was removed?

Could further damage have been caused to other areas of the car by having the VCU/IRD fault?

I've taken off the full propshaft from the IRD to the rear diff, should I still be having problems ?

You will hear alot of different dronning, whinning noises with the prop off. The Ird is not under so much stress as its not driving the rear wheels. More back lash on the gearing.

sulky freelander children:p:p:p:D:D

go play with ya toys.

hit a wall........that will slow the piece of **** down:p:p

Surely a better result would be the occupants setting the piece of **** on fire and walking off to the pub??

I have a good enough sense of humour as i'm sure most do on here. Just tired of the same old tune being played when it comes to Freelanders.
We get it, If you really want to go off road seriously get a Disco, Defender etc.

BTW sorry to hijack yout thread. I hope you get the problem sorted.

If the VCU fails by stiffening up, this causes high loads in the IRD and differential hypoid gears (because of transmission wind-up). If these fail then debris can enter the bearings or be entrapped between other gears in the IRD.
Bearing failure is typified by a droning noise. If debris is floating about then you might hear clonking (and damage to) the gears.
The best way to make a preliminary assessment is to drain the oil from the relevent unit into a clean recepticle and then examine it for debris. Fishing around with a bar magnet will extract some of the particles.
It is usual to find small amounts of very fine particles (grey sludge) if the units have been runnig with oil unchanged over a long period.

When I came to drain to IRD, it was already empty which I'm guessing is where my problems are coming from. There was also quite a bit of debris inside. I removed the debris and filled with 75w/90 geabox oil and took it for a drive and its no better infact its worse, the gearstick is shaking and the car seems to be juddering.

I know that I'm going to need a new IRD, but, could I have caused any damage to the Gearbox or is the shaking and juddering connected to the broken IRD.
