Hi guys, my p38 is really getting on my nerves now. Changed the head gaskets a few months back and didn't make a difference. Recently stripped the front down to reveal a slack timing chain. Replaced the timing chain today, started it up and mint ran fine just over 1000rpm for 10 minutes and then starts to splutter slightly and cuts out. Turned it back on and won't start unless you have your foot on the throttle. Will run when revs are held on but will not idle. Doesn't lock up when starting it any more after its cut out, so that must've been the chain.
But it hasn't idled right for a couple of months before I took the chain off. Does anyone know the best way to set the idle up, I'm hoping the cable needs readjusting as I had it off to do the gaskets. I just feel I'm so close but so far away from actually fixing the bloody thing.
Please someone help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Base Idle speed is controlled by the engine ECU and is not adjustable by turning adjuster screws etc.
That said, the ecu is adaptive , maybe it will revert back to it's optimum setting, usually after driving a few miles.
Were all the sensor plugs etc. replaced correctly?

As far as I know the plugs were all put back where they come from. Its just weird how its ok while its "on choke" then its not. Can't drive it yet as it has no tax or mot. I don't think it will go into gear if its not idling. You can pull the throttle cable out and it will tick over at 1500rpm. Just want it to idle so I can fluids circulating for half hour, then Ill know if its fixed or not.

I had a similar prob last year. Turned out to be the fuel temp sensor which was thinking the car was still cold even though it was hot, so was bundling too much fuel through, spluttering and cutting out. To check it I started up, waited a minute or so and disconnected the sensor then it ran as smooth as you like. It's the sensor attached to the fuel rail.

Checked for air leaks around the intake manifold ? the easiest way is to spray carb cleaner around the joints and see if the engine picks up. Get the adaptions re-set aswell.

Thanks guys, thinking about it, it did sound flooded after the first time it stalled. And when I tried to restart it it felt like there was no fuel there unless you held the throttle down. Ive heard about the leaks around the manifold aswell. Going to have to try them out.

Right Im going to drive it round the block in a bit to see if it will set its own base idle. Im also going to unplug the fuel pressure sensor if it plays up to start with, then go from there. Anyone know what symptoms to look for when driving it to eliminate or pinpoint any problems?

Just been round the block in it and its broke still. I'm 90% convinced it's overfuelling. Drove about 1000 metres and it was sound, not as pokey as I thought but I was going cautious anyway. Went up a culde sac and as I went to go round the corner it died. Didnt start straight away and when it did it was misfiring until 3000rpm. Went to put it into to drive and it stalled as I pulled off. Again tried to start it and it misfired upto 2000rpm and wouldn't go past that for a few seconds. Also when I put it into reverse it wouldn't move responsively. Tried to disconnect the fuel pressure sensor before I started it but wouldn't run, I guess it's got to be running before you unplug it? Does seem to idle for a brief second or two after a rev at 500rpm then dies.
So to some it up, drove ok for about 5 minutes, then stalled.
Doesn't seem very pokey, but wasn't flooring it to full extent.
When it stalls you start it up and it misfires mainly low revs, but will clear if the revs are held down.
When you do get it running and select a gear it stalls.
Also the gearbox fault is showing on dash, not too concerned with that at the moment putting that down to other faults at the moment (or is that my problem?)
Could it be the fuel temp sensor? (Need to get it running again and unplug that?)
Or could it be a coolant temp sensor?
First time I've drove it properly tonight in the last 12 months I've owned it and I loved it. Any more further advice or help would be much appreciated, my neighbours are saying get rid but I'm this close now and I've fell in love with it. Please help me to save it!!!!!!!!!

It was the fuel temp sensor I said to pull earlier. You mention the fuel pressure sensor? It should run and re-start, for that matter, with the temp sensor plug disconnected. Dont unscrew the sensor though unless you want fuel spraying everywhere - not recommended.
