Hello Guys,
I successfully changed the glow plugs on my p38 today however it is still not starting straight away, i have to crank it for about 6-7 seconds before it will start. Does anyone have any ideas what else the problem could be as I have spent over £15.00 per glow plug and still stuck with the same problem.

Did you check them with a meter you some times get a duff one.
Also check replace leak of pipe might be air in system when left for long periods .

Stick a voltmeter from one glowplug to the block, get some one to turn on the ignition (but do not crank), you should have around 11 volts at the plug, 10 will do but any less there is a problem. If the voltage is low, check the earth strap from the engine to chassis, if that's OK time to check the the battery voltage when the glowplugs are on, if the volts are low the battery is dodgy, if the battery voltage is good then it's on to the glowplug relay.
 
Check how long the glow plug lamp is on first start in the morning. Should be about 7 or 8 seconds or more on a cold morning. Glow plug duration time is variable depending on temp signal received from ECU temp sender. If glow duration is only four or five seconds on a cold morning sensor needs changing. It can also effect hot starting. If it is duff altogether, the ECU defaults to 50 degrees, which will effect both ends of the starting spectrum. Of course it could be a duff timer relay but a temp sensor is a lot cheaper for a starting fix.

Funny you should say that wammers just changed a set of glow plugs in brother in laws been a week today and suddenly non starter , had to easy start it they were Delphi all worked when I fitted them stays on for about 5 sec then goes out I checked they are all getting a feed if 12 volts after checking it seems to start every time I leave it for a couple of hours .

Today after checking I did notice it stays over the blue for a long time only thing I could thing off for non started cold was ecu temp but the gauge one and ecu one's are not linked are they , as if gauge one was showing cold doesn't meant ecu temp gauge is ??? Only thing I could think off when he went on to easy start before I changed them it just happend all off a sudden no sigh of a glow plug dead dying wish I had checked them now
 
thank you for all your responses, I have checked them with a multimeter today but engine was hot and it wasnt giving a reading, there seems to be air in the fuel line coming from the fuel filter, it has always took around 7 seconds to start but if i start it up to move it turn it off then back on sometimes it starts straight away....... Possible a fuel problem?

Possible fuel in tank remove filter of feed pipe locate container switch ignition
On fuel should spill for the duration of glow plugs if not crank car if no fuel intank pump faulty providing relays are in good order.

No not linked at all. Totally separate sensors.
