Stiff transfer box lever.

Went to a pay and play today, not had this Disco off road and made the mistake of testing the Hi/lo range but not the diff locks, so made a prat of myself and got dragged out

Cut the day short, as the conditions were getting worse anyway.

Got home and no way would the diffs go in, in the end lost my rag and got a short bar on the lever and lo and behold, diff locks in, could not then off course get them off!! Anyway after more brute force I pulled the spline out and finally getting underneath a mud covered car in the rain, using a crow bar, got it sorted.

Now is it just the linkages that cease up, or could it be something in the box, bear in mind this vehicle has most prob never been off road in its 95 k miles life, so guess the lever has never been used.

Its stiff through lack of use.....strip clean and refit.

hi there

i have found if you use it onece a week just put it in low or hight and use all of the transferbox onece a week it kind of frees it up,so try using it onece a week if you can

Have soaked everything with a liquid lube and spray grease, so hoping that will help a bit, think its going to be a strip job as you say though, just so long as its nothing wrong with the box then all should be OK, I hope.

yup - its `townie syndrome'. diff-lock and high/low need using regularly or experience of members reporting here is that they tend to seize. Funnily enough when i connected my difflock linkage up recently to a 10 year old TD5 I was half expecting it to be seized, but it wasnt - free as you like. Mind you I do change the transfer box oil more often than schedule.

Take it then, just try to ree the linkage up....

Any tips on doing this or just keep trying to move it from the gearbox up...

Well, depends which car you have - but you could take off the central counsol, and by stripping down get access to the top of the transfer box, and you may be able to get access to the mechanism and grease it eithout fropping out the box. Search for this - there have been some strings on freeing/greasing diff-lock

Update........

Took all the centre console off and gained access to the transfer lever, disconected the diff lock mech and undid the Hi/Lo mech and slid it off the shaft, then removed the lever mech and case (Four 10mm bolts) from the top of the box, it was pretty obvious the slide was ceased solid, also the lever slopping around.
There is a plastic bush that acts as a hinge, this was in pieces, placed the casing in a vice and used a hammer to start tapping the shaft, loads of WD40, tapping the shaft back and too and slowly it freed itself off

Call to a local LR spares place place and the whole gubbins comes out at £23, so will just replaced the lot.

Rest of the linkages are all fine, just greased everything up, so when the bit arrives tuesday it will be game on again

I know this is a very old post, but what did you manage to get from LR? Was it just the plastic bush?
