Hi all. When i have been towing the horse box or been on the motorway at 70m.p.h for an hour or so the gear box becomes very stiff when i slow down or stop. Its really hard work to change gear. Its a manual box (LT77) It becomes hard work untill it cools down. I have been told its overheating. I dont want the expence of fitting an oil cooler, but what else can i do. It ok for oil and its just been renewed and the oil in the transfer box has been done too, wth auto box oil? (that i dont understand) There i nthing wrong with the box when its not been on a long run or its towing.

Perhaps you misunderstood the mechanic? The gearbox uses automatic fluid, the transfer box uses EP 90. You can add a little teflon to the manual gearbox I got mine from the John Deere tractor dealer up the road to me, this was advised by a knowledgeable Land Rover parts person and did ease the shift when hot. By hot though I mean real hot, i.e. hard driving off road at speeds in excess of 120 kph in a hot climate for hours at a time.

regards

Dave

mines just the same, seem to remember this trouble with 77s when they were "recent" and it was a selector problem involving a strip down so i'm living with it lol, may just be worth stripping the top housing and lubing it up though, got to be worth a try!!

wahey, lets form a stiff stick club, shame seeing as my gearbox has a perfect mainshaft, no synchro crunch or noise yet my girlfriends has a cracking gearshift, nice and smooth yet clonks like a clonky thing

Does the "tunnel" get hot next to your left leg where the gearbox is? Our last 300tdi used to get realy hot and experienced stiff gear box changes after long journeys to Spain, then it went BANG:mad: Not much help I know but the new gearbox was a delight:)

"Clonking" gear changes is usualy the main shaft splines worn in the transfer box where it goes into the imput gear!

hiya dude, mine is the exact same, it nearly broke my sholder bone trying 2 change gear lol (or atleast it felt like it)
i emptied the oil and changed it with ATF-Q autobox oil, and never looked back, no more stiff gear stick, and this is even after a 400mile run. and most of it doing around 70-80 on motoway. also noticed no more 2nd gear crunch.
