Steve's unexpected Series 3 rebuild.

These have also polished up ok. With even more time I think I could have got more scratches out but even I draw the line somewhere.

I found this thing when we cleared out my dad's loft years ago. It was part of some ancient wooden clothes press device. I thought it looks more interesting than the original spare wheel thingy.

I'm cleaning up all the galvanised bits and coating them with clear lacquer. I like the way it looks and i'm hoping it stops it deteriorating.

My only experience with cork gaskets is on rocker covers and if you tighten them up more than half a turn more than finger tight, they leak. Shame they dont still do asbestos gaskets. Maybe its possible to buy gasket material they use on factory machinery.

I still haven't got round to putting any oil in yet. I've tweaked the nuts a bit tighter but not much. Fingers crossed.

In my experience - along with what I learnt about alloy heads on ferros blocks - I have had positive results with the spray on Hylomar stuff. It is meant to stay liquid within the joint and can stand high temperatures.

Aye, we've all been there .... IMHO, Get it bought and be done with it - looks nice ( if nothing else - no criticism intended ), and is another job crossed off the list ....

Dilemma. There is an old house being renovated in the next village to me and they have cut back the bushes and trees and revealed a late 88" series 3. Really don't have time, space or money for more land rover trouble but what if it's a super original, miraculously well preserved gem? From a distance it all looks straight but then again they all do don't they? Can someone either please talk me out of it or go and buy it so I can't.

Well, I'd be interested in that, if you've enough to do - and my plan would be to restore it

I've done my Sherlock Holmes bit and found the owner of the landy in the bushes. I got a really hostile response to start with but I managed to talk to him and we ended up having a really good chat. He's definitely not interested in selling and he wants to restore it on a new chassis. Trouble is he's not very well. I've left him my phone number and told him that if he wants a hand recovering it from the undergrowth i'll go down and help him out.

Checked on that fancy new transfer box gasket yesterday. Haven't put the oil back in yet but even the dribs and drabs that are still in there are already leaking out. FAIL!

Brake pipes are on. Didn't think i'd manage to save this bit.

I made this bracket thing to match the original but then didn't like it so made a different one instead.

I thought this would work better.

And even got my very blingy dipstick back in.

The old paint is off the bulkhead. All the old steel has been coated with bilt hamber hydrate 80. I've also made a stand to help with the next stage of prepping and painting. I'd better make a good job of the prep as the top coat is going to be rollered and brushed so i'm going to need all the help I can get.
This is halfway through before I did the middle bit.

A bit more done this weekend.

Like everything else the brake and clutch pedals needed a lot of work.
