Oh it never ends.. I have an alpine dvd player which is wired to stock speakers plaus a boss 300w amp with 6x9 on a homemade shelf. My problem is when the volume is up slightly the power cuts out and turns it all off.. Do i need to get a more powerful alternator to add more power or do i have another issue with wiring... Cheers guys

Is the HU cutting out, or the Amp?

It sounds like the Voltage to the Amp is dropping below the level at which the DC to DC converter in the Amp needs to work. So check the Amp power cable is connected directly to the battery (fused of course), and is sized large enough to supply the necessary current. A 300 Watt PMPO Amp will need 10 AWG power cable or larger. Check the ground connection is also solid to the body and is also 10 AWG cable on a decent ring terminal.

I doubt it's the alternator, which will have more than enough capacity for a low powered stereo.

They both cut out so im presuming its an earth problem. Cheers nodge

That's interesting because I'd have thought both items should be supplied from different live feeds and grounded in different locations too. The Amp should have it's own power supply and ground.

It's possible that a speaker terminal is shorted to ground on the HU. This could well cause the HU to shut down to protect the amplifier stages. If the HU shuts down, the Amp will also shut down as it's remote feed will be lost.
