Hi all,

I have decided to replace the non-working radio cassette on my discovery (1996 diesel automatic) with a new CD/DVD etc etc beast.

I removed the old stereo and the wiring is a right mess, it has obviously been hacked at some point and the end result is that I am getting lots of interference (hissing from speakers when engine is running) and it only works intermittantly.

so my only option is to re-do the wiring.

I am going to run a clean feed in from the battery - any suggestions as to the best place to pass the cable from the engine bay into the dash area? And also, I need to discover which cable was for the electric ariel, any suggestions?

And lastly, is there any cabling for any safety items (airbags etc) running through the same harness?

I hope someone can help!

OK, I spent last night on it and worked it all out! I now have a super duper stereo AND IT ALL WORKS!!!!!!!!

Only 2 (minor) issues. There is next to no room behind the stereo for cables etc. The original radio cassette only had a basic power and speaker connection so fitted, but on the new one there are inputs and outputs for anything and everything. The slot in the dash for a stereo leaves no room for manouvre (please don't look too closely at my spelling) so I cannot get behing the stereo to somehow move them and therefore the stereo sticks out by about 10mm. Anyone got any suggestions as to how to 'create' more room behind that area?

The other minor issue is, I assume connected in that the passenger side heater control doesn't turn all the way to hot anymore. I think one or more of the wires must be fouling out - so I guess I have to remove it AGAIN!

Mike,

Look on the well known auction site for an 'apature collar' its usually listed in the land rover section, its a spacer the security cage passes through and gives you an extra 10mm depth .... which is just enough to get cables and connectors behind. Expect to pay about an 'Ayrton Senna' with postage.

Search through the rest of LZ and you will find another couple of posts about this, one of them mentions removing soundproofing to make the apature deeper!

If it's the type that fits in the centre console over the transmission cover then Remove the console fit the radio cut the soundproofing off the tunnel where the radio fits and replace. this allows you to keep the cables out the way when you fit it. I did this to my disco and it fits fine without it sticking up.
