stereo installation???

i have a 1986 defender 90, currently with no stereo i would like to install one but was wondering about a few things..,

* how easy are stereos too fit? (can i do it myself)

* what do i need?

* how much would all the parts be?

they are easy to fit. Do you have speakers already fitted ? is ther power cables there already ?

The factory fit for speakers are pointing at your knee on the lower dash, you buy the plinths from landrover there abbout £3 including vat and i fitted aftermarket speakers. The live, swithched live and earth can all be taken from below at the clock ,lighter pannel.

You can buy the mount for the stero from land rover to Think there about £15 .

Apart from that easy enough to fit

the wiring should be there already,near the centre of the dash,just unscrew the centre cover and have a look,look on mudstuff.co.uk they have some cheap radio brackets,as well as the mud console,im going to buy a console,you can fit your radio and various switches etc to it

Sorry for the thread hi-jack, but any answer may help you.

I have a 1991 D90, and it doesn't have a stereo. The standard connector in the 'fender does not fit into either of my "spare" stereo's I have in the garage. Is it some "old" connector that does not fit modern stereos?

Any idea where to get a connector from? Seems like a minefield to me. I will try to dig out the pictures of my connector...

Halfrauds used to stock different connectors - worth a look

Eltax you will probably find a convertor at halfrauds but its easy enough to cut and connect the wires to a new plug (most stereos get sold with the wiring in the box anyway).

My landy is a 110 commercial, and I didn't have (or just couldn't find) any wiring for the radio so I wired mine in using small block connectors.
As above, you only normally need three for the radio
Ignition switched live so you can't leave your radio on,
Permanent live for the channel presets,
Earth.
Speakers are easy, depending on how many you have, just get some speaker cable, run
in pairs using block connectors.
Only disadvantage I can see is you need to unscrew the connectors if you want to take the radio out, but it's hardly an every day issue.
I picked up the feeds from the rear window wash wipe and ciggie lighter.
Put mine in a mud console,

has anyone fitted speakers to their bulkhead behind the front seats?

been looking at fitting a new install into the 90 and have had a couple of speakers with x-over and tweeters that i have never found a place to fit but if i could cut a couple of holes in the bulkhead it would be perfect.

Just on fitting stereo to my new purchase, mate gave me a radio/cd player which plugs straight into wiring found behind the dash, speakers ordered off flea-bay to attach to bulkhead, aerial and cable also on there way from fle-bay. Decided it needed doing after the 3+ hr drive back from buying the 90! I was talking to Eddie Stobart wagons!!!

Its a slow news day alright.

The connectors in my 1994 landy are standard iso connectors. If yours are the same, you should be able to find whatever adapters you need on eBay etc. Any chance of posting a picture of what's there already.

really depends what you want in your landy. Stereros are generally really easy to wire up. Even easier than it used to be in that there are so many adapters that you can just buy, without the need to wire things manually. You just have to decide what stereo you want. Just keep in mind, defenders are generally very noisy to drive, so your music experience wont be the same as in a car. Also,some defenders (like mine) may not have rear speakers fitted, so you might have to fit them yourself (if you want them).

Hi, thanks for the answer. To wire up what I need, is it a case of just wiring up the right colours? I don't know which colours are for which components! Anyway, I did put some pictures in my post, copy/ pasted below, thanks in advance for any help.

Not sure about fender wiring but you can usually match the 2 live & earth wires (red, yellow & black).

for speakers there will usually be pairs of wires but one will have a stripe along it. ie you may have 2 purple wires but one will have a black or white stripe through it. These are for 1 speaker and depending on plug you will have between 1 - 4 pairs of different colours.

last time i looked in the disco there were 2 purple, 2 green, 2 grey & 1 more pair that i cant remember :doh:

by the looks of your pic halfrauds will have the connector if you cba with the hassle but it will mean about another foot of wires you will need to hide in the dash somewhere.

I have a 1991 110 and trying t figure out how wire in my new stereo, i was going to use the blocks but not sure which wires i should cut them into. the stereo also has a caution ticket stating to avoid any damage to my unit the antenna has to be plugged in first. I dont have one and was just going to use my ipod into the aux for the time being, what do you think?

You will need a multimeter to check which wires are which on your landy.

You will need an earth(0 volts) , a live (+12 volts) and a switched live(+12 volts)

The switch live is usually optional it will just turn the stereo off when you turn the key to the off position.
As for just using it with your ipod it will be OK. Plugging the Ariel in first is just a precaution incase it earths anything in the way in it shouldn't. It is always a good idea to make sure the stereo is off before plugging an Ariel in
