Hello
Any idea where I can find a detaild guide for opening and removing rear diff? What tools would I need? I am trying to remove a broken piese of shaft from it.
tx in advance

Lots of stuff on You tube, Does not matter if series or defender as they are much the same
Not a lot to it, remove prop shaft, remove all the small nuts around diff housing, couple of whacks with mallet to free and then wiggle it out. Only snag can be the weight depending on how much " beef " you have. I used to be able to do it by hand alone both out and in but need a jack for the return these days. A builders strong plastic bucket is good to topple it in to, stops it rolling around, holds it to work on and saves some mess.

Although I greatly appreciate your help I would need a more step by step thing. Please keep in mind you are talking to a mechanical ignoramous. However even at my level of knowledge I imagine there would be a lot of blood as they say in Western movies (oil). What to do about it?
Also if I only need to get access inside to take that blasted broken tip out, do I need to take everything out or just the cover of diff? Since you talk about weight I amagine the entire thing must come off, right?
ps. its years I am trying to figure out your avatar, what is it?

What cover? pic? Only Salisbury axles have a cover.
Drain the oil a plug in the lowest part of the diff probably with a square hole.
You also need to remove the other half shaft.

you need to get a manual to look at, it would become clear then, it’s not hard.

Here are some photos. The removed diff is what was there before.

So you have an old diff so you can work out how the existing comes out surely;)

You have the normal rover type axles not a Salisbury

1. Drain oil
2. remove the other half shaft
3. remove prop
4. undo all those nuts around the diff leave a couple on a couple of threads.
5. give it a few taps (not direct with a hammer) use some wood and whack that to break the seal, remove the last couple of nuts.
6. wiggle it out if you are confident of how heavy it is. if not put a trolley jack under it for help.
7. coffee break :)

How hard is that:)

Oh should add dont lay under it and be prepared for some oil to drip on you and run down your arm:D.
How much of the broken half shaft is left BTW? as you may need to wiggle a bit to get the diff out .

Did you get a hold of a manual?
Yes original LR pdf stuff. I think with your guys comments I will be able to do it. I'll try to find a mech who will let me use his shop for a fee. This is a great idea for a business I am surprise nobody is doing it. Thanks everybody.
