Hi all,
I've been watching with interest the discussions about chipping your TD5's. I was probably going to go down the Dynachip road due your combined good experiences until I was browsing EBay for no particular reason and came upon a Steinbauer P-Box chip that I couldn't resist for the price.
Had been previously used, don't know for how long, but was presented to me in the original box. So having bought it for a around a tenth of the price new I fitted it in less than an hour.
Wow. Now, I don't go rushing around in my TD5 and have got used to driving within the limitations of the flat spots and lack of power in certain gears at certain revs but this little box of tricks is proving to be the best money I've spent on the vehicle.
I'd already done the 'in' things that you all suggest, de-EGR, silicone turbo hoses, freeflow air filter and they all worked their magic, the car got better and better to drive. I'm even a fan of Hiclones but don't go there as its been done to death.
The TD5 is now quieter, smoother, pulls from much lower revs. I have to restrain myself from accelerating up hills that I would normally have held the revs just to get up them. I can't believe that a small box of electronics can make such a big difference.
Now would I pay around £500 - £800 that I've seen these boxes go for? No I wouldn't because I don't have that sort of money to spend on my vehicle. Would I chip my TD5? Yes! This engine is capable of so much more than Land Rover allowed it.
What I've read since buying this bit of kit has shown how different it is to other plug-in chips. By the way, I'm not trying to sell this thing just gloating that I got a fantastic bargain. I like the way that it provides a way to switch off the performance enhancement at will. It is a piece of Austrian kit, I didn't know that the Ausrians were heavily into tuning, and says that it is best with Euro standard diesel. So on future planned trips to North Africa for instance I can switch the thing off and let the standard tune deal with the crap diesel, something you can't do with a reprogrammed ECU. It might be worth doing for the MOT as well but I'm not sure yet.
I have not noticed any smoke after fitting, there was non beforehand anyway. Have used just a quarter of a tank of fuel and the mileage seems to have improved dramatically. I'll keep you informed on that one when I've used a few tankfuls. As I said earlier I'm more interested in fuel economy than making a sports car out of a brick but to make overtaking so much more safer and possible for those short bursts than wondering if I can make it is fantastic. Many years ago I owned a Saab 2.3 turbo and you could overtake in unbelievably short distances and its still a memory I cherish.
So to finish my question is 'Anyone out there in LandyZoneland fitted one of these and if so what are your opinions?'
Of course any other queries about this thing I'll try to quell you curiosity. But only after you've searched the net for the info that's provided.
