steerring column

hello,

first post !! i have got a 02my discovery and both my keys will not unlock the steering lock. it was working fine one day then didnt work the next. i have been told that the whole steering column has to be replaced and will take 5 days ?? is this the case ? why cant just the barrell be replaced ?
any help appreciated.

thanks for that, very interested. the garage was obviously quoting the landrover way and having to remove the column.
