:emps1: Hi guys can someone shed some light on my woe please... On full lock at a slow speed the freelander seems to have troouble continuing momentum ie pulling into parking bays it almost grinds to a halt unless i accelerate harder and then it seems to ease. Its almost as though the tyres are rubbing somewhere but cannot see any sign. i have spoken to a garage who says he had a td4 in that did the same thing, I can't see this being right any clues please guys?

that sounds quite normal,it's what all freelanders do to a lesser or greater extent, it's something to do with the viscous coupling.

When you are on full lock the front diff has to slip the drive ratio so to allow the front wheels to turn independently. However the back diff is driving in balance still, with no slip. To stop the transmission winding up, the VC has to slip, which requires effort. It is this effort that is making your car bog down. Mine does it also, its perfectly normal for a FL1.
Two ways to stop it.
1. Go Mondo mode as in front wheel drive only there can be no conflict between the diffs. However, who wants a 2WD landrover!!!
2. Don't go round corners. That'll cure it.

'tis true, they all do that sir, unless your vcu is u/s in which case it won't do it at all (best case, vcu has failed and isn't passing any drive to the rear) or it'll do it so much the back wheels will skip (worst case, vcu has failed seized and is locked solid, giving permanent 4wd and your ird is about to follow unless you deal with it)
