Right I am out of ideas so help needed. I have a slight wobble on my steering. I can feel it worse as the steering is returning to centre after a slight turning of the steering wheel. I can feel it at walking speed it then disappears slightly at 30 then returns and gets less noticable at 50 and then almost disappears from the steering wheel at motorway speeds and beyond but I can feel it through the gear lever slightly at 70ish as a side to side vibration, only faintly though.

I have had the front balanced, that didn't cure it, I swapped the wheels side to side, that had no effect so I swapped the wheels front to rear and still the same. The car is slightly out on the tracking as it pulls to the left slightly.

I doubt it is the prop bearings as I cannot feel it throught the body and there is no noises from the gear train so doubt if its ird, transfer or gearbox.

The tyres that are fitted are not the best of makes, think they are called federal. Any ideas where to go next.

Track rod ends, all suspension bushes, engine gearbox mountings, steering column joints, wheel bearings ... applicable to the rear and front ... ;)

Dunno specifics as I don't know Freelanders, but that's where I'd look on any vehicle, after you've eliminated tyres.

Had the opposite before on my Freelander - vibration at 70 ish not noticeable below. New tyres sorted it.

just been under the car and the front diff mounting is cabbaged and needs replacing, the diff nose is moving all over the place, could this be the cause

Have you had your tracking corrected yet? I've had similar symptoms develop this week, and thy remind me of when the tracking was out on my Citroen years ago, so intend trying to get that sorted this weekend.

havent had time to get mine tracked did it sort yours out.

Should have asked you the same thing. This weekend got hectic for other reasons, including Series III only running on one cylinder.

Think I have found it, I put the spare Goodyear on the front right and the wobble has gone, the rest of the tyres are cheap crappy Federals at £40 each (previous owner).

Sounds like you've lost a balance weight on that wheel. Be careful on changing one wheel alone the Freebies don't like it if the diameters (ie level of wear) differ across an axle. It'll stress your transfer box and, believe me, you don't want to do that. Probably better to get that wheel balanced and put it back on.
