So thinking about buying a wooden steering wheel. what's involved in the swop over...... How do you get the air bag out safely?

Torx bolts on the back of the Steering wheel, you can get at them without removing the cowling round the Column if you turn the Steering wheel for access.
Can't remember what size Torx off hand, but It's around T25 & use a deep one as there buried deep in the back of the wheel.

Use a small mirror (and head torch?) to find the screws and line-up the torx driver.
Well worth doing - it feels so much posher than the ordinary leather!!

Hi, I just swapped mine for a wood and leather wheel and it is quite easy! I have read though that it's best to disconnect the battery and then wait 30 mins before unplugging the airbag. I filled the time by taking off the cowling behind the wheel - bit fiddly but I wanted to lock the steering wheel in the dead ahead position so that I could get the new wheel in the right position when fitted.
The clock spring can be a little fiddly too - this is the electrics for the steering wheel buttons and you need to be a bit careful about refitting this round plastic disc that sits behind the steering wheel.
Bit nerve racking plugging the air bag plug back in - just make sure that your face is not directly in front of the airbag for this bit.
Good luck and hope you like the new wheel when you fit it.

+1 about keeping your face clear when plugging back in! I've seen the aftermath an airbag can do at close range and they make a mess

As long as the battery is disconnected and the system has had time to discharge, the air bag cannot go off.
