Hi, want to replace a very worn steering wheel with one in better condition, if the retaining nut should be replaced and not re-used, where is the best place to get one and what is the recommended torque setting for it? Sorry am a newby :)

yes, it stayed on for the first journey, a mile or so, then when restarted it stopped on for a few seconds after all the other lights, then went off.

Anyone interested the part number is DBP3067L £1.65 + vat from John Craddock Ltd, or RYH100590 from my new best friend Mohamed at [email protected] for £0.30 each, who spent good time and effort and 3 emails to locate both part numbers and advise me to get it from the dealer to avoid shipping costs, top effort for such a low value item, possibly inappropriate, but I raise a glass to you, thank you
 
I s'pose it makes sense to change it as it's a nyloc nut, or whatever it's called. You are only supposed to use them once.

Oh well. My steering wheel's still in place. I'll keep the mole grips handy in case it comes off unexpectedly on a drive from now on:D
 
Ok, old thread, but, I am about to change my steering wheel, have studied how to do at "The U-Tube Academy" and was wondering any advice or precautions to take on the first part, removing the air bag?

No not the missis the thing that blows up un your face, although the could describe the missis as well! :D
 
Never done it on a Freelander but my did on MGF.
Top tip, don't let the slip ring rotate while the wheel is off. If you do make certain you centre it again before refitting the wheel. Happened to me when I let it rotate one revolution and as soon as I wound the wheel full lock it snapped the slip ring and SRS light came on and stayed on until I got a replacement.

And if you can disconnect the battery for around 30 mins before starting you should avoid any sudden loud noises.
 
If yours is the same as my hippo then disconnect battery, wait a bit, undo 2 screws that go into the rear of the steering wheel which allows yer to release the air bag from the steering wheel, so yer can get to the steering wheel nut. Do this with the wheels straight so you take the steering wheel off/on straight, as it fits on spines and putting it back on the wrong spline is annoying.

Thanks, if your Hippo is the one in the photo yes it's the same apart from mine being a 3 door soft/hard top.

The bit I was interested in was the disconnecting the battery and leaving it for a while, I had never found confirmation this is what you do - I presume to stop the air bag going off when removing it.

Thanks, as said above the battery bit was what I was concerned about. I will keep an eye out for the slip ring.
 
ignition off, unplug airbags.


No need to wait for it to "discharge", they simply don't work like that on the Rover based systems.
