Steering wheel controls retrofit?

I have just watched a vid on youtube that showed a chap replacing a standard steering wheel with one having the audio and cruise controls.
After the swap, presto... he could change channels and volume etc from the steering wheel.
Is this right? Is all of the wiring and controllers already in place?

Depends on year. Im pretty sure the wiring should be there from 2002-2006.

Thanks JR, can't understand why they would send one off the production line without it if that is the case. Perhaps I will order up a switch and try it. Will post back when I have done so.
From further searching it looks like the cruise is a lot more involved than he suggests but just having radio controls would be nice.

it is easy to cut the steering wheel plastic to put the switches in and wiring was there on my 2006 hse td4 model

The wheel rear cover needs trimming to fit either button. Cruise is more complicated than just fitting the switch though and if it's a 1.8 petrol then cruise can't be fitted at all.

Just a note to say there is more than 1 type of stereo control switch on the steering wheel, best to connect it and check before you start cutting, good luck

my latest one already had radio control it was just for the cruise one check the wires are there before though.

D'oh... not prewired. Does anyone know the part number for the relevant wiring loom?

hi, i retro fitted the radio and cruise control paddles

was lucky enough the wiring was there behind the airbag and also all the other wiring to allow me to retrofit the cruise control as well. was all plug and play

u also have to buy a remote control box that plugs into the back of radio that allows the paddles on the wheel to communicate with the radio
think it was a 3.5 mm jack plug size required that on the back of ur radio

cruise control will work on autos , but depends what year ,model etc

hope that helps a bit, quite a few have done the paddles and cruise unjust need to ensure the wiring is there

Thanks gstuart, I have actually fitted one of those double din touch screen systems which does not have the 'socket' in the back.

The documentation does show two connectors in the main harness as being steering wheel control 1 & 2. I guess all I need to do is fit the switch and then route a pair of wires down the steering column and into the radio part of the dash and then connect to these two connectors.

Will take it all apart again to see how easy this will be.

what year model etc have u got plse, as it may be there

when U remove the airbag there should be a small green plug sitting near the centre column

don't see why it shouldn't work with u running some wires inbetween the radio and steering wheel paddles , just need that jack socket in the back of the radio

Many thanks. It is an 05 1.8 XEI model.

I did remove the airbag and there is a black plug rather than green which has the horn wires connected to it.

There are 4 other pins showing so I guess two of those are for the audio and the others for the cruise. No idea which ones are which yet.

I will have to patch into the harness of the new radio which is not a problem but I am not sure if the wiring from the steering wheel to the radio 'area' are present so that is the bit
I will struggle with.

I will take it apart again tonight and pull the black connector to see if there are any other wires down there.

Finally got back to this project...
Having removed the airbag and pulled the black plug I can see that there are 6 pins in place so fingers crossed the wiring is also present.
What I am struggling to find out is if there are wires behind the pins and if they are where they go to.
Does anyone know if it is part of the standard Land Rover radio terminal block or is there a separate lead that I am missing?

Cruise won't retrofit without the cruise control ECU and if it's a manual, factory cruise can't be fitted at all. There are after market installers about however

Ive got the ecu nobody said i didnt mate all i said was i retro fitted it and stereo controls, thats what the topic is isnt it?? (the freelanders are wired for it, it just needs the right components to make it work.)

A late answer I know but I've just seen it. I didn't explain my response property which didn't help.
You said Freelanders were wired for CC. This is incorrect as not all are. Only some years of TD4 autos have the wiring for the CC ECU. The OP has a 1.8 which will be a manual. This means that no CC wiring will be fitted and the factory CC can't be made to work as it uses the auto box TCM as an interface with the engine ECU.
Radio steering wheel controls will fit however.

Is there a definitive guide to A. checking you have the correct loom for c.c. and B. the parts required to do so ?
