Freelander 1 Steering wheel audio controls messing about.

Hi
I recently fitted a new steering wheel with the audio controls, the volume and skip buttons behave very strangely, they will either change the frequency or load a CD or change frequency, they don’t control the volume or skip as they should.
Someone suggested something about the white mark in the window on the Squib, I took the squib out today but couldn’t work out what the white bit is supposed to do apart from appear and disappear as I turned the squib.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a resistance error, as the switches are just a resistive ladder, which the HU then assigns a particularly resistance to a particularly function. Often HU manufacturers include many more functions in the remote control facility, which allows vehicle manufacturers to provide controls for whatever they think is necessary.
LR chose volume up n down, and station up n down.
However if the resistance isn't correct for those functions, then it's possible that the HU will have the resistance it sees in memory, and select wherever function is matching that resistance.

I modified the resistance ladder on my old FL1 SE, so it worked with the replacement audio system I'd installed.
When I sold it, I must admit that I forgot to change it back to standard, even though I'd fitted the standard HU back in.
Who knows, maybe you bought my old modified wheel controls?

How did you modify the resistance?

That rules out the switch then. Have you replaced the clock spring?
They are known to fail, so many you've got a high resistance in one of the clock spring ribbon wires.
You can swap the terminals in the plugs over to use the cruise control ribbon wires instead, as long as you don't have CC of course.

I simply replaced the resistors in the switch to values which suited the Sony HU that I installed.

Replacing the clock spring is next on my list of things to try, just need to find one at a sensible price.
I don't have CC so swapping wires could be an option.

Then it's easy, as you only need to extract the contacts from the current positions, and move them to the CC positions.
