Steering tug to left (need clean shorts)

Whilst on the motorway today doing about 50 ish the 90 seemed to pull to the left sharply for a split second. Looked around expecting to see trees blowing in heavy wind but nothing:confused: I had 14ft trailer on the back so just assumed it was something and nothing.
Later today no trailer on, whilst turning left onto motorway steering seemed to be pulling left again for a second or so:confused:
Another 10 miles, doing 60 ish and suddenly the old girl decided she didn't want to head to sunny Blackpool and tried to take a detour over the hard shoulder and down the embankment:jaw:
Everything happened pretty quickly but the steering took some serious fighting to stop me taking a nose dive into the farmers field. Got out had a feel about, no hot wheels, all brakes look fine and nothing seemingly obvious.

When I set off again there was a kind of grinding sound for about 100m or so then everything back to normal.
I'm guessing this has to be binding brakes or maybe a wheel bearing??? Anyone had anything similar??
 
:eek::eek: Gotta be front nearside if its that severe. Could be the inner bearing rather than the wheel bearing, dunno, reckon I'd be outside pulling the bugger to pieces.....much too scary
 
my disco tried to swop lanes at 55 on the mway..

managed to hold wheel straight, just..

front wheel bearing fubar... the cage that held the rollers was in bits, rollers all over the place..

alf hour job to fix...
 
Not looking simple at the moment. Wheel bearings are looking ok but i'm not ruling them out yet. There was some grinding and squealing this morning on the way to the garage and it was sounding a bit Diff'y. I've left her with a very reliable indi that I use and he's whipping the diff out for a look.
The theory being that if the diff was binding it would likely be the front left wheel that bound up:confused: the right hand Brake calliper is also seized which can't be helping matters...
The guy who's doing it has years of experience with land Rovers and he hasn't let me down yet:rolleyes: Annoyingly I need it Friday too.. I can see this getting expensive:mad:
 
how does an iffy diff want to lock lh wheel,in a straight line diff gears/half shafts wouldnt be turning in relation to diff carrier,anything is possible but wouldnt have been my first thought

Not my first thought either but i'm always open to suggestions. My theory being that if the diff jammed up there is a chance it could stop only one driving wheel:confused::confused:. I may be way off the mark and to be honest hope I am. I'd much rather be changing something that won't break the bank!:eek:
 
I've had something similar happen to me before in a 110. Scary as hell! For me it was the ABS sensor being misaligned.... (i don't know if you've got ABS or not) If you do then try resetting the depth at which they are in. Pull them out (can be quite hard) give them a decent clean and put a dab of grease on the end of it. Push it back in all the way so that its definitely touching then turn the wheel fully left and right (the surface that it measures on isn't completely even so going left/right sets the gap correctly).
This sorted it out beautifully for me. Otherwise it could be a replacement job on the sensor...
 
Well it was the Wheel bearing! But what should have been an easy job has turned into a bit of an arse. Some muppet at some point has decided to hammer the splined end of the CV and mushroomed it slightly:mad: so after a bit of humping and trying I ended up having to take a cutting disk to the Flange, and obviously I ended up with a few cuts in the hub:( So now with a new hub, bearings, CV, flange and in the morning hopefully a new Stub shaft she should be back on the road. Fingers crossed that Buckleys have what I need in the morning

Why is it that supposedly easy jobs can turn to pot in the blink of an eye:(
 
later axles get no oil to drive member so splines either wear or seize ,its common to find end mushroomed as somone trying to free it at earlier time
