steering seixed

hi all,im going to collect a series 2 tomorrow but the owner has told me the steering is seized.any suggestions on a quick fix to load it on my truck? it had been sat in a barn since 1998 and was pulled out last summer.thanks

Just take off the steering arm ball joint bolt thing and turn the wheels manually?
Depends where the seize is.
If you can't line the Landy up to the trailer can you line the trailer up to the Landy?

i may be able to line the truck up with the 58.hopefully its something simple.thanks for the advice mate

If you can, remove the arm from the steering relay located in the front cross member of the chassis, this may give you some degree of movement on the wheels and there's a good chance that the seizure may be in the relay.

Most likely the relay - unless the balls have rusted to the seals. Undo steering arm and see if the wheels move - steering box is a cheap and easy fix if you can get it out of the crossmember! New balls and seals is a bit dearer but not to hard a job.

Judging by sorting the very stiff and heavy steering on my SIII when I got it the other week, I'd make the relay my first port of call.

How heavy is standard (unassisted) steering on a 2A/3? Mine seems very heavy and I was wondering if I could make it a little better

I think it varies from landy to landy, due to tyre sizes, tyre pressures, the amounts of oil (or complete lack of) in the box & relay, how regularly the steering is adjusted etc etc. If you drive a pas car as well, the difference will be pretty big. Still, you'll not need to join a gym to get the popeye arms!

Does it self-centre when cornering at reasonable speed ok?

If not your swivel pre-load is too high and needs a shim added.

Parking and manouvering is always going to be work in a Series, you just get used to not turning the steering unless the wheels are turning

Mine didn't self centre, and I made the swivel pre load my first port of call, but even up on axle stands with the bolts loosened right off it didn't make any difference, getting some oil into the relay cured it right away.

I have read a few horror stories about Britpart steering relays and am suspicious that the previous owner used one when rebuilding onto the galvy chassis, so am seriously thinking of replacing it with a genuine one, if such a thing is still available.

My steering went from extremely heavy and wouldn't self centre to quite light after replacing the lower timkens in the swivels. They were completely shot when I removed them. I wondered why I had to keep shimming the swivels.
