My pump is pooring oil out of the gasket seal in the photo. I,ve checked the four 15mm bolts they are all secure. The gasket is very thin is this correct, and is this simply a case of replacing the gasket? Whats underneath it.

That's not your pump, it's your steering box.

I have been rumaging around the forum (i suppose i should have done that first). Can someone confirm to me that if oil is leaking out of the paper gasket shown that its due to a seal failure on the shaft below it and that the best thing to do is fit a reconditioned unit rather than mess around with it. Is it an Adwest unit?

Sorry Sypher i was writing that as you responded. The bolts are tight , i checked all four , what can i do to check the pressure releif valve and where is it

have you had the landy long? i had the exact same problem when i baught mine, that is not the original gasket. all they have done is remove or slaken the 4 bolts and put sum gasket paper between the plate and the box. you need to remove the 4 bolts and slaken the nut in the middle, then wind the grub screw in with an allen key which will then release the plate. You cannot buy replacement gaskets for this so you will have to make 1 with gasket paper, make sure both surfaces are clean and smooth & dry before you refit the top plate. MAKE SURE you wind the grub screw back out to where it was as this adjusts the backlash (slop) in the steering box

Had the landy a week ,had a vauxhall monaro before that. I,ve got a lotus esprit that iam restoring so iam no stranger to a bit of spannering just not familiar with landys.

Is there a seal or an o ring on the shaft that i can replace once i got the top plate off, is the gasket paper a quick fix for a shot seal.

Replaced the gasket paper, and it seems to have done the job for the meantime. I'll order a seal kit so i can replace that square edged seal as far as i can see that is the only reason that it could leak.
My Britpart steps turned up so i fitted those aswell , nice and easy.

just a quick note...

seeing as I read above that you are new to landys and then read you've bought steps from Britpart...

make sure thats the only thing you ever buy from Britpart.... dont even buy a gasket off them, the quaility of any part is rubish!

do a search on the forum for "****part" and you'll see...

i have the exact same problem, mine was a recon box about 18months ago and now its leaking from the top, when i took the top off there wasnt even a gasket on, so i have orded the rubber seal that goes in the top and i will put it back together and i will now make a paper gasket for it and see how we get on.
