hi there, i have just purchased my rr 2.5dse and i have 2 queries regarding as i am a complete newbi to RR's.
1st is that when turning steering to left h down i get a grunching noise, sound almost like rear of steering wheel rubbing colum cover but its not!doesnt do it on right hand down. and there is a little vibration in steering wheel when it does it.
2nd when driving along with foot on the gas when i take my foot off i get a noise not that too disimalar to a thrush bearing sound on a standard manual car but this is an auto! as soon as i put my foot back on gas it stops!
if you have any ideas would be great cheers mike,

1: steering noise maybe cavitation in power steering pump due to low fluid. Check level as per book.
2: Transmission noise gotta be accurately localised. Drive down a quiet road with some-one walking alongside listening, or find quiet road with wall etc nearby so you can hear reflected sound. (windows open stereo off!)
Could be: transfer-box, gearbox, axle (front/rear).
If you`ve just got the car check/change all oils fluids, don`t just take the sellers word for it`s all been just done!

If it comes on overrun and goes when accelerating it is highly likely to be the old diff pinion bearing problem. Classic symptoms of diff trouble. An output bearing/wheel bearing would be constant but change note with speed.

cheers wammers, i assume your a marine or ex.. my son just passed out in may!
with regards to steering grunching noise the power steering fluid on max!

Very EX bootneck. Long time ago. Well done your lad it's not easy. Don't know about now, but it used to be the longest and toughest training stint of any fighting force anywhere in the world.
Noise on steering could be a lot of things, you would need to be hands on to sort that one. I have no real suggestions other than to examine everything in detail checking for wear or undue tightness in joints.

P38 is easy if you think about it and work things out. Get RAVE and read it. Things fall into place after a while. Good luck.
