Steering guard

Hi

What do people think of this one from Rebel4x4 Steering Guards, Diff Guards & Jate Rings for Land Rover Defender / 90 / 110 / Series II / Series III
Its the 3rd one down the Reinforced Rebel guard, it has a 5mm plate behind to add strength.

I won't be doing hugely serious offroading as this is my daily ride, so some greenlaning and light offroading at the weekend is all I'll be doing.
I don't want HD rods instead, I do want a steel guard (as they do look good too). What metal coating do you think would be best the gold passavate or the PSU Zinc finish?

I have the first one on that page and it is a good steering guard which I can strongly recommend. I haven't seen the 'Heavy Duty' one before, but can never imagine needing it, the standard one is pretty strong already and would need to take some beating to damage it!

yep +1.A guard is a guard.Dont bother with heavy duty.

Thank you both for your advice. Does it matter what metal coating I go for, the gold passavate or the PSU Zinc, is it just a colour preferrence or does one give better metal rust protection than the other?

If your only doing light stuff why bother adding the weight? Ive been running around without one now for 3 years.

everything I hit has been higher up and taken by the ARB bumper! Metro's, Dogs etc

Makes no difference, but personally the gold one is not to my taste

Same as mine.

Mine gets a beating regularly and it's taken all of without any problems. Well worth the money and just as good as many other more expensive ones.

I've just asked Rebel 4x4 if the guards come with any fittings/nuts/bolts etc and they said "no, it should use the existing bolts on the vehicle".
What does this mean? What existing bolts? How have all of you fitted this, did you buy your own nuts & bolts?
Don't think I'm being an idiot here am I?

As Rebel say, use the existing bolts that are on the chasis - the ones that fix the lashing eyes in place.

As a first timer at fitting one (like I was) when it arrives offer it up and you will see how it fits and what bolts you have to take out. On the drivers side one bolt is about 5 inches long and you have to take it out..... it could take a bit of time and a good soaking with GT85 or WD40 is minimum... use a drift to tap it through.
If the bolts/nuts are in a poor condition you may want to replace them. I replaced all mine with new quality bolts and nylock nuts from a local hardware store, I took them down with me... a smear of copper grease when bolting it back will help if you ever want to take it off. The old ones could well be fine.....only a couple of £ for nice shiney ones.
Don't fit it on a Sunday when the hardware store is closed in case you shear one off

I will buy the one from Rebel then, but my power steering box sprang quite a nasty leak from the gasket yesterday, so will need to fix that first of all.
