Hi folks,

Fitted a britpart * (hmmm.....) steering damper a week ago. BTW - had the same problem as some else here that I read - had to file it down to make it fit near the pivot bolt! Anyhow, the steering became way better, but after a few days I noticed the death wobble was back.

Checked it and the rubber had slipped over the nylock nut at the chassis end. I managed to get the nylock off , and the rubber / washer (I had these the wrong way round!). Sorted the order of the rubber / washer out, but now the new nylock won't tighten up enough. It's gripped the rod and is turning the damper, leaving the washer just dangling free against the rubber.

I've tried all sort to grip the cylindical damper bit whilst I tighten the nylock but cant do it. I think the nylock is stuck on a bad bit of thread.

Any suggestions as to how to get it tightened?

damn good idea - I'd not thought of that - something I'll keep in mind for another occassion maybe, but in this case, the offending nut is currently flush with the end of the rod ... grr.....

thread chaser or re-cut the thread on the shaft, Or wrap an old fan belt around the damper and then use a spanner or similar to twist it round and round to form a kind of tournaquet. This will allow you to grip the damper tight without damaging it.

I gather you have looked at my thread re minor issues... http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/steering-damper-cant-get-fit-114273-2.html I had no problem tightening mine up. Just have a look at the pics I took and make sure you have it on right... are they poly bushes? I would take it off and take a good look at the thread... is it the right size nut? Try running a non nyloc nut down the thread to the bottom of it, it should go on using just your fingers.
Post a pic before you start hitting with a hammer! :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll get a pic taken tomorrow and post....

Hopefully I'll be able to report some success!

Hi all,

Right, so finally got round to this. Solved the steering damper issue ... but found / created another problem (isnt it always the same?).

So, I thought I'd go with the suggestion of using an old fan belt. Need to get the old belt off first ... but encounter a rounded nut and couldn't do the belt!

This was the state of play:

I couldn't tighten the nut.

Found a piece of door seal that I used as a tourniquet:

And eventually got the nut off :

Examining the old nut (that had come with the steering damper) I noticed a slight difference. Both were nyloc's, both were 17mm - at least I thought. I tried to get the nut back on and it jammed again. I tried the old nyloc and it went on without much problem:

So all was well again..... death wobble gone. Washers on right (hopefully).

Now I've got this rounded 10mm nut on the power steering plate:

Really awkward to get to with removing the fan and cover, and the two arms underneath ... but it looks like I'm goign to have a fight on with this one.....

What the hell do I do now??

Glad the tounaquet worked for ya.;)

Time to invest some wonga in a set of rounded nut extractors/removers. They are one of my most valued bits of kit that I have in my tool collection. Mine are snap-on but cheaper ones are available.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've just ordered the Irwin set from amazon! I think I won't regret it :)
