Steering damper change P38

if its the drag link then its a piece of you know what!

That was done a few months back by the previous owner. Steering feels a bit vague. Bundle of papers came with the car and no mention of damper ever being changed. Shocks etc done a couple of years back, so I think its worth the cost of the part and my time to see if I can improve the feel of the drive.

Changed damper. Had tracking done. Still feels like someone else grabs the wheel randomly and pulls it in one direction or the other. Not fiercly, but just enough so that you have to correct it constantly. I've been thinking about the power steering pump/fluid/belt. Could there be a fault in the power steering system so that the amount of assistance to the steering is inconsistent and results in this fade in/out resulting in vague steering?

I don't know the P38 ... but if it's anything like a 'normal' Landrover then vagueness of steering, twitchiness etc can be down to swivel pre-load.

On the Disco it's a time-consuming but relatively easy task to check this, but as I don't know the P38 so I can't help more ... but have a look for a Rave manual and look up swivel pre-load. It's certainly a cheaper fix than replacing the PS box. ;)

Make sure steering arm is set correctly. If someone has changed drag link and not had steering box centralised that will cause this problem. There are marks on steering box to show when it is central. Set wheels ahead check steering box marks, if they are out, disconnect drag link and line up marks, adjust length of drag link with wheels ahead and steering box marks lined up to correct length and refit. You may have to reset steering wheel. Full proceedure detailed in RAVE if you have it.

You might be on to something here... drag link was changed in May 08. Worth a look, thanks.
