Steering column movement restriction.

I have a L322 2004 4.4 petrol RR. It 's developed a longtitudinal movement problem on the steering column. There is slight movement ,so i know the motors not burnt out and it's probably been caused through lack of use. I'm hoping that a simple fix with someWD 40 on the mechanical assembly be it rack and pinion or whatever.Has anyone else experienced this problem?.
