Anyone got any advice on top steering column bearing replacement?

Try not to damage the old one if its original,

The pattern new ones are crap....I took the upper coloum off....from where it bolts to the steering box...its quite easy....you can then tap the upper bearing out with the likes of a broom handle,

I found the new one was to tight to go into my coloum...so just fitted the balls from the new one to the old parts,

I found when the outer coloum was removed the I could lift the inner up/down...it had a lot of slop in it....fixed by removing the very thinest shim from the lower end of the box...needs to be done with a spring balance on the steering to make sure its not to tight to turn....wheels in the air of course.

Nick.

Thats interesting. Thanks I will like try that out in the morning.
The original top bearing was completely cream crackered. Held together with a trusty jubilee clamp.
Thanks Nick

Knackered as in un usable sadly. Hammered and bashed. Think person before tryed removing.
got the old one out by removing column suround. Banged in to new one. Slid the tube back over the column. Ball bearings all over the floor. The bearing is way to tight for the column.....
is this why you said there no good?
Any ideas to sort it welcome......
Thanks
Dave
