Hi all on the steering box output shaft the pwr steering fluid is pi*sing out when i turn left . has anyone had this problem .do i need to get a new steering box or is there a O ring kit i can get if so where can i get the parts from.

thanks

Had that problem 3 yrs ago on a 96 Disco and Ifitted a recon box from Paddocks and no problem since .
At the time I asked the local main dlr about a seal set and the storeman advised me not to bother - at best he said it would be a short term fix .
If you are getting a reconditioned box it might be a good idea to get it with the drop arm attached as the drop arm can be a **** to remove . I just about got mine off with a 10 ton hydraulic puller and I read on other forums about guys having to use gas etc in an effort to get it off.
Changing the box is fairly straightforward and at least you should have it solved for a number of years rather than months .

Getting the drop arm of is a bitch to do, I gave up and bought a new arm when changing the box on my '94 300. I was also advised not to bother with a repair kit.

The main reason the re-sealing isnt always successful is that the shafts get rusty up inside where the seal is. so instead of having a nice clean shaft to run against its on a rusty pitted shaft.
AS for the drop arm.......If the box has been leaking for a long time they can just fall off! Otherwise its a puller on it taking the load and hit with a hammer from above. Make sure you leave the nut on the shaft loose to stop it all flying off when they let go!

at £75.00 it will be a recon item, expect it to last only as long as the warranty if not sooner. I always fit new stock ones and get roughly the same number of years out of them as the one that it is replacing

I didn't find removing the box too bad but I couldn't put a time on it as I had to leave it twice and come back to it .
Removing the drop arm was the worst part ( mine had been leaking slightly for quite a while but was still hard to pull off)and I imagine that a Disco that had been off roaded could have the mounting bolts etc a bit more rusted .
The box itself is also fairly heavy and if there is PAS fluid escaping it will make it slippery . Access however is excellent and this is a big plus .
I appear to have been lucky with my recon box as its coming up on 3 years and still no problems - I sold it to a friend last year and would have heard if it failed .

Replace with another box. Chances are the box is worn allowing sideways movement of the output shaft letting fuild past the seal. If this is the case a new seal won't make any difference. Trying getting someone to turn the steering wheel a little whilst you look for movement in the shaft.
Only speaking from experience.

regards Pete
