Just parked our Disco 1 at work when the steering wheel decided to revolve continuously without turning the wheels. The shaft appears to have dropped out of the bottom of the box and landed on the tie bar.
I've seen boxes leak, make noises or feel bad but I've never seen this happen.
Any ideas whats broken, is it fixable or just fit a new box?

Just as well it didn't happen on the road.

mine did that going down the road , it went clonk, and had SO much play like 180 degree to go straight then when i parked it just went, and because i spun the wheel around it took out the Air bag/horn rotator thing under the wheel

i fitted a recon one

Here's the problem.

sorry to hack this thread but does anyone know what size the nut is that holds the steering box arm onto the shaft as mine keeps coming loose. want another nut to lock onto the first one, tried thread lock with no help:(

the locking washer is on but the nut keeps undoing just enough to make the steering go sloppy, so want another nut to lock the first one. could the nut be 22 or 24mm

If there's enough movement to cause the nut to loosen even with the tab washer in place, I think you need to look closely at the splines. There must be a fair bit of wear.
Bear in mind that to get the arm off the broken shaft in the photo, we put it in the press, jacked it up to 8.5 tonnes pressure and it would only come apart when I whacked the end of the arm with the biggest hammer I could find while it was under pressure. Took 3 whacks as well!
I think the nut was 34mm.
