I took my 1980 Rover for MoT last week the tester noticed a bit of play in the steering box, as you probably know it's a power steering unit, question is it the same unit as a Discovery? Some work to do over the next few month's to keep the old girl going, the box being the biggest job.

Andy. :)

This will most likely be up and down movement on droparm shaft. This play in steering box can be adjusted out. There is a lock nut and adjuster on top of box to adjust droparm shaft end float. Do this very carefully make sure there is no bind lock to lock. The MOT test steering wheel side to side movement allowance is quite large with steering boxes. Steering wheel free play without moving road wheels is max 75mm on a vehicle equiped with a steering box. 13mm for rack and pinion.
