I've ordered a refurb kit for the Series 3, and its come in a little blue bag....

The steering box is on the bench and its not like I need to get the vehicle back on the road pronto. Is it worth rebuilding using this kit, or am I shooting myself in the foot?

Any experience of Brit Part or any other steering box refurb kits gratefully received.

Thanks Flossie, yes its the Britpart kit I'm concerned about. I know some Britpart stuff is to be avoided but other bits are better. It would be slot easier to get the right parts fitted now, even if I do need to buy a new kit.

So, experience of any steering box kits would be helpful :)

Is there any branding on the items themselves? I've just bought a load of stuff and was disappointed to see Britpart packaging when it arrived, but the bearings themselves have brands like NTN and Timken etched onto them, so I heaved a sigh of relief.

whats it consist of ,because generally if ball bearings are worn so are the inner races which are part of worm shaft which would be needing top be replaced too

I fitted new seals to my steering box the other day. Didn't even make it out of the garage before they leaked again. I got a paddocks recon box on now and so far so good

I spoke to someone about this same issue as mine had (still has) a very slight leak when I got it (probably added 80-100ml fluid over 3 years). Anyway he said it's very hit and miss doing the rebuilds on steering boxes as the seals have to be exactly in the right place or they don't seal plus often things are worn that don't come in the kit. Professional rebuilders know as soon as they get them apart if it's worth doing. I bought a rebuild kit and it's still in my box of bits. I he said when the time comes he can do me a proper one for £130 and help fit it so I'm not doing fit the kit now

Thank you for your feedback folks. I'm in the middle of a complete rebuild so I'll have to wait and see what the box internals look like when I get round to it! o_O

his advice isnt exactly true the seal ,input seal can only fit in one place and lower shaft seal is pressurise against the circlip and steel washer so can only sit in one place unless you choose to pack it ,in which case why,if you need a new worm and sector shaft box isnt economical to repair,

Thanks. Thats why I gave it the caveat that it was something someone told me. I have a rebuild kit here. Is it worth doing then? How easy are they to actually get apart etc.... Any special tools?

they are worth doing if lower shaft (sector shaft) isnt pitted or grooved which is common hence some dont last long ,input shaft is usually ok,though the same goes, not too difficult no special tool though a steering shaft uj is handy for checking rolling resistance play etc ,if you wanted to try a phone call would get more info over easier perhaps

Thanks. I have a 300TDi disco for spares which I believe has the wrong drop arm but if I order the correct drop arm and rebuild that one (so I can take my time over it and even paint it etc) would that go on my 300Tdi Defender?

I've just had a look in the Disco and Defender.

I think I have a 6 bolt in the Defender and a four bolt in the Disco.......

This is the Defender's steering box:
