HI All,

Can anyone describe the symptoms of a failing steering box?

I have a D2, 130k miles , which sounds awfully low for a box to fail, or is it?

Secondly, i know the steering arms are different, but will a Disco 1 box fit?

cheers

Play, and a constant pulling left

ive checked everything else i can thing of, to the extent of using a spring balance to check the resistance on the hubs, all the bj's have been changed etc

Can find anything anywhere else, so thing it cant be anything other than the box

I have adjusted the play at the steering box, but its making no difference, the steering is vague, vaguer than is usual anyway,

Cheers

Silly question here how are you checking the play ..? Best way is to jack the chassis up and let the sus droop ... Chassis jacking on a d2 can be hard halfway down the doors is a cross member you can use and place axle stands carefully on the out.rigger and allow the axle and arms droop you may the find some play in a bush or other component ....

Might be a brakes issues. Left side brakes binding?

Before my steering box went mine was snaking on straight roads was like steering a boat excessive play (you could turn the wheel nearly a quarter before the steering responded) but the pull was both ways

Hope that helps!

Thnks Guys,

Biglad, already replaced the front calipes as i thought that might be it

Benny, i'll do it that way in the morning

And Sir DD, yes, boat is the word!! at least with the left pull its more likely to end up in the ditch than oncoming traffic

thanks for the thoughts
