starting up lumpy

mrs has got freelander 1 td4 2000cc 2004 and it has started running lumpy on start up and just started carrying on longer than before

i believe it could be a few things maf sensor.injector,or some sort out cold start valve ,last one egr valve
just need to know where to start.
we always use shell fuel.
also told off a 2stroke oil trick to clean out fuel system and injectors

I had similar problem, so far ive only given one redex treatment and it seems to have made an improvement as it hasnt been lumpy again since. Goin to give few more doses on future fill ups and hopefully be the end of it for a bit.

Try letting the glow plugs work a little longer, once the light goes out give it another five or six seconds before starting it up. This has cured my smoke on start up and the lumpiness.

Hope it helps you, seemingly the glow plugs continue to heat after the dash light goes out.

going to give it the 2 stroke oil trick 1st then redex next step

we allways let glow plugs warm up 1st
no real smoke just sounds lumpy for a short while

Could be an injector on the way out, try a leak off test and see if it shows anything.

cheers but starting with easiest way 1st

right this morning did a few things ran car with maf disconnected and it ran the same (bit lumpy when cold and did smoke a little out of exhaust) revs moving slightly up n down 900/1000 rpm ish
also noticed it has a fat burner built in front corner and it has started smoking and when smoke stops it sounds like a windpipe been played

i been told fat burner kicks in at 5 degrees or less to help warm car up is this correct and is it working right ?

no visible leaks from injectors etc

Yes the fuel burner heater comes on automatically at 5c

check your glow plugs, they are most probably u/s

It's not struggling to start up at all
Starts 1 st time every time and glow plug light comes on and goes out with no faults
Just to tick over lumpy when 1 st started from cold

One glow plug out .

In the whole time of owning my Freelander, i have never seen the glow plug light come on. The car lives in Spain though. It is currently doing exactly the same thing as yours. When started up from could the revs go up and down. The other day it was doing it though having been driven. A bad smell was coming in the cabin as well intermittently which didn't smell like diesel or oil. Car is running fine otherwise. I don't have an EGR as i replaced it. PCV has been changed for the BMW unit. I know it is is probably a sensor but don't which one.

Same as mine. White smoke today for a few seconds then it was fine.

It's going to be looked at next week.

hi, i recently bought a 2006 TD4 auto 60,000 miles. Thanks to the info on these pages,i changed the oil & filter, air filter, crank case filter and checked the auto box level , had to add 3/4 pint then drained out what i could and filled with new back to level, this made the gear changes much smoother from cold , but it,s still not kicking down right. Also blanked off EGR wife swears it,s doing less MPG . any help on these would be much appreciated

cheers after reading up i think you might be right
white smoke is unburnt fuel
lumpy at start up so poss x1 glow plug out
weather now getting colder so hence no showing up as in warm weather no issues

Take the wires of each glow plug put a thick wire on the positive of the battery touch each top of each glow plug briefly the one that didn't spark is duff quick and easy way to see what one is duff
