Right, before you all moan and say do a search, I've searched and can't find the answer to this one.
Not had a problem with starting until this "big freeze", but my '97 110 300tdi won't fire up.
Getting 12.3v off the battery, dropping down to somewhere near 6 or 7v when turning over. Once engine running (Jumped off the missus's Freelander - much to her sarcastic delight) 14.2v from alternator.

Do these figures seem right?

New glowplugs and/or battery?

Battery is Lucas 663 110Ah 750cca. Can't see a date on it.

All non ****-take comments greatfully received, had enough of that from her indoors. Ta

your battery is ****ed should be min 9 volts on cranking, if it starts and fires evenly on jump leads then glowplugs should at least all be working-or they miss on affected cylinder generally

Try taking the first glow plug out and check to see how long it takes to glow or if it glows, then try the rest.
Another thing to check is the connector on yer fuel stop solenoid... might just need a clean. This is the furst place ah look at on mine as it's pretty much the same thing you're havin'.

Thanks Fanatic,

My thoughts were the battery, but thought it best to get opinions on here befor I part with cash!

Thanks Bustersbus,
I'll try that first, I've seen your your guide on changing glow plugs, but not sure about the fuel stop solenoid?

Put the batt from your wifes car in it and see what the voltage drops to then?? Saves buying a batt and it ain't that. Also turn the key a couple of times to heat glow plugs longer as it's so cold out there

Forgot to say... Ah changed the battery on mine and it didn't really make much difference...... and that's with the bus in me garage!
Ah've still got the other battery (fully charged) in the back of me bus just incase tho';)
Ah think my problem is the insulator type thing on top of the solenoid turns a wee bit, which might be breakin' a contact or summit inside it (?).

Another thing to try, is undo the bleed screw on yer fuel filter and pump the lift pump to see if there's any air in the system;)

Thanks again chaps,

Left trickle charger on all day (7 1/2 hours) volts a little higher 12.6v, tried the two glows trick, but still failed to fire up, and today weather not so cold.

Managed to extract my works van battery from under floor (Renault Trafic 95Ah 850cca) and the 110 fired up no problem.

So it would seem a new battery required. Bah Humbug!

Yeah I would suggest you are right. Is your van a work van? If so swap the batteries over and make your work buy a new batt when your van failes to start in the morning lol

Did think of that one, and almost bolted it in, but the Trafic is brand new, only done 4000 miles, an old lucas might look a bit suss.

I've found a Bosch silverline 100Ah 830cca for £112 5 year warranty :)

Kwik fit etc. all quoted around £95 with 3 year warranty.

Yeah I bet it will work for a while if van Is brand new. And don't think your boss will roll his sleeves up and change your batt anyway so how would he know?

My boss wouldn't know where to look for the battery, but the Renault warranty mechanic might have an inkling.

The battery in the Renault is a shorter than the Lucas so can't get it in.

:5bcheers2: cheers anyway.

A battery of that size should be sitting on 14V ( a tad above as well ) at full charge, cranking should be quick.

i ran a battery which had the power ( came from a truck ) and displayed 14V at full charge but would not crank very well, it just didn't have the cranking ampage anymore, and thus wouldn't start the Landy

Trickle charge might be only half amp! So a 60 amp/hour battery would need 120 hours trickle to charge it fully from flat!
You only need to top up the charge but it would be better to charge it much longer than that. Good idea to top up the cells if needed too! ;)

while u r on that subject id like to check mine as the battery seems a bit weak sometime, how do i check the battery cell levels? do i just top them up with de-ironised water? or empty it a fill up? or what?

ta muchly
