hi all...

when i come to my disco 1st thing on a morning i have to turn the engine over quite a few times until it starts... then when it does theres a small puff of black smoke...
the rest of the day its fine and starts first turn of the key but it seems if i leave it for more than 6 or so hours then it takes an age to fire up...

any ideas?

the glow plugs were renewed about 100 miles ago along with a full service. overnight its parked on level ground and the battery seems to be fully charged.

My 300 Tdi had a turn like this, leak-off pipes replaced, job's a good 'un.

Yeah sounds like air in the diesel (pipes). It could be pump seals, although I wasn't aware Discoveries were suceptible to this kind of failure. Have you always used decent diesel (ie from busy filling stations)? I've heard bad things about WVO or SVO causing seals to start leaking although its all hearsay, etc. and don't really want to get into the debate!

the engine is a 300tdi with EGR still intact... for now

the leak off pipes? as in the small pipes between the injectors? i replaced them with some tight fitting rubber hose the other day.

i also loosened the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter and operated the lift pump to dispel the few air bubbles that were in there.

ive always fuelled from the local garage. never had a problem before.

OK, so some bubbles at the lift pump, I'd check the fuel sender. Lift boot carpet, remove six screws and cover, check fuel lines going into sender. The nuts are prone to rust and the nylon elbows prone to crack .. they let air in ... ;)

Sorted the smoking problem... disconnected the EGR valve electrical plug (near the PAS fluid tank) and took the vacuum line off it.

the disco now goes like $h!t off a shovel and doesnt smoke!

ill eventually take the EGR off completely and blank it off but for now this'll do!!

I had this issue, esp when I am running Veg oil, and I have checked everything possible, and renewed most parts.

In the end, I ordered another new Battery, and Alphaline C31-1000 from www.performancebatteries.co.uk 130 AH with 1000 CCA, and starts on the button, no problems. Need a shoe horn to fit it in, but it fits, and does the job - cost me £99.95 delivered.

Now I am going to use the battery I had in as a 2nd one on a split charge system.
