If my 300tdi defender is stood for more than a day or so it takes an eternity to start. It turns over just fine but its like theres a lack of fuel what you guys think??
cheers

It'll fire once, then turn over for a good 10-20 seconds before firing properly, it usually takes a few pumps of the throttle to even encourage it to start!!!

For a start, do NOT pump the throttle when trying to start this engine.

Leave your clog clear of the throttle pedal.

Only then will the injection pump be able to set itself into COLD START mode, which requires (a) NO throttle and (b) the engine to be stopped or turning over at VERY low revs - like starter motor speeds and no more.

Cold Start mode flings in LOADS of extra diesel AND radically alters the injection timing, all in the hope she lights up quickly. Once running at tickover speed or more the Cold Start mode disengages and the engine should keep running.

People here's going to ask you about clean fuel filter, checking lift pump, using the GLOW position (if it has one) on the key and so on.

Remember, in principle all diesels are a bummer to start from cold, and if the least thing goes wrong they more than likely won't. There's going to be a technique, and once you've found it, that should be that.

NEVER resort to ether sprays. They will damage the engine.

Pumping the throttle should NOT help it to start, infact you are disabling cold start mode which throws in excess fuel when the engine is doing low RPM such as when starting.

It sounds to me like there is a fuel leak somewhere, or the pump has failed.

If its a fuel leak then it will fire with whats in the injection pump then it needs to turn over a bit to prime the fuel lines fill the filter etc... I had this problem it was a dodgey fuel line, it was draining so needed a bit of cranking to fill. It could also be a hole in the pipe somewhere.

It could also be your lift pump has failed, so the IP has to pull the fuel up from the tank which it is NOT good at.

A couple of ideas to get you started.

cheers guys a few things for me to look at there tomorrow, no white smoke once it does start just the usual small puff of blackish smoke. I'll stop it with the throttle and let the cold start do its stuff, i gave her a good power wash underneith today so ill have a look for any leaks! then after that look at pumps etc
cheers
