Sounds like u/s solanoid to me try taping it with a light hammer failing that dig deep 
Could also be the starter motor - most solinoids these days are built into the starter so `be prpeared to dig deep in the old pocket again to keep the Freelander going, we know the feeling and have had re-conditioned starter on our V6 to fix this exact problem.
