starting help!!

i'm from land of disco so be gentle, this is for a friend. he's got a 90 with a disco 200 in n it won't start. can hear what sounds like a relay going mad when he turns key. doesnt sound lie flat batt, too much activity still. he put a brand new motor on yesterday. no movement when trying to start in gear. any other ideas chaps? this is important as he has my beer in the back lol!

First thing that I'd do is to put a multi-meter across the battery terminal to check for 12.5 volts+.
 
Absolutely - the number of times I`ve wasted hours thinking it can`t be the battery because (insert excuse here), it often is. Both my Defender and my previous LSE seem to have been unduly sensitive to under-performing (but by no means flat) batteries
