Hi
I have had a 200tdi disco engine put in but i think the starter ring hasnt been done, engine wont start 1st time but allways does 2nd time rnd, will it be ok or does engine have to cme out again ;-( paul

I'm lost why would you change the starter ring if all the teeth were ok. think we're gonna need a bit more detail?? you get back what you put in so more details = better diagnosis

do they line something up with starter ring?
nope it''s just a ring of equally spaced teeth round the outer edge of the flywheel. Starter motor moves a cog forwards to engage the flywheel and spin it. then it retracts once you release key.

If it was misaligned it wouldn't engage at all. if there were teeth missing it would be hit & miss as to whether it caught the flywheel.

why it making that horrible starter motor noise 1st time but starting 2nd time every time. any ideas ? have had 200tdi put in for 19j.

The 19j I've just put in my 109 does the same. I changed the starter motor and checked all the teeth on the flywheel because it did it in the 110 it came out of. Nothing missing or broken but it still does it sometimes. It's a mystery.

mine did this the other week and it turned out to be a fault starter.
was told it was somthing to do with the starter solenoid not being strong enough
to engage with the starter ring properly.

Worn ring-gear, loose starter bolts, worn starter pinion can cause the "horrible noise."

When it gets to the stage that it takes a few tries to get it to engage simply put car in gear and rock it to move the flywheel which might give better teeth on ring-gear for starter to catch.
