Does this sound like a Starter motor problem?

turn the key a relay clicks thats some whrere in the cab proberly with the fuses but the starter motor does not turn... some times there is a mad relay type clicking from the engine bay then somtimes there is a clunk then afer lost of turns of the key 40 odd and 5 mins it starts!!!

its a 1986 90 with a 300tdi convertion!
its a pain in the arse gonna nip to paddocks tommorow and grab a new one just checking if other people come to the same conclusion as i have cos new uns are £80 !!!

Thanks, Chris

My first car was a beetle that i had to carry a big hammer round in to start coz the motor was fookd and stuck to the housing, try literally wellying the starter motor case with the hammer if it does it again, if it then works then yes, it's yer starter motor!!!

Sounds like this symptom and just turning the key lots of times eventually un-jams it (like the hammer), but this will burn the motor out pretty quickly!

don't just check yer battery connections, check yer erff straps and starter connections aswell. make sure them is all clean and tight. some times the contacts in yer solenoid can become pitted and dirty, check them and check the brushes in yer motor if all yer connections are tight.

Disco 1 TDi 200 94 Recently purchased this fine piece of..... that needed to be push started; on the third journey out, by two passing victims, I say this cos their kindness was rewarded with the normal cloud of crap that comes out the exhaust on start up. Anyway checked the starter motor, new obviously recently changed checked the battery Ok, checked the forum, back to the Disco to find the nearly separated earth lead, starter to chassis.
Fine starting Disco ;) - Fine forum Thanks everyone
