1990 200tdi 90 has been playing up when starting, especially when left overnight. battery is good but turning the key all appears to be dead.....no noise. knocking the starter motor with a long pole does the trick but has been getting worse and now will only start with a push. yesterday the engine turned over but there was a loud rattling noise(like you try and turn the engine over but its already running) type of noise. removed the starter motor today with the intention of replacing it....bastard of a job....thing is could this be due to something other than the starter motor?,,,while the starter motor is off and before getting a replacement is there something else i should check......ps it waqs a ****e getting it off, christ knows how i;m going to get one back on!

Id just stick a new starter motor in there as beating with a pole sugests that the solonoid is goosed and prob so is the brushes in the motor .

what voltage is in your battary btw ? - should be around 12.3 - 12.5 volts

after replacing mine with 2 secondhand ones in a week i bit the bullet and bought a new one. too much of a pain in the arse job to have to do again!!

it waqs a ****e getting it off, christ knows how i;m going to get one back on!

just use the crowbar to refit it also

yep battery voltage is good, its the constant rattling noise that bothers me....like something else may gone and not just the starter motor.

That sounds like the bendix was stuck out ( the gear on the starter ) if it was then it would of been spinning with the engine running making a hell of a racket , post a pic up of your starter with the gear in good view so I can take a look .

I've had exactly the same problem with mine, to the piont that even after knocking the starter it still would'nt go, so I stumped up £75 and bought a new starter off ebay and fitted it on monday. With the new starter on the engine spun over really quick and fired instantly..... that was until this morning, when I jumped into it to go to work (picture the scene, wifes car at bottom of the drive in front of the garage door, my car parked up behind hers on a up hill sloping drive) I turned the key and nothing! the new starter was dead or do I have a wiring fault? this has now cost me a days wage on overtime and the cost of the starter, not to mention the 1 1/2 it takes to get the starter off. GRRRR!:mad::mad:

Well after much head scratching and general farting about I think I have found the problem with my starting issues, I've traced the fault back to a nackered starter switch, looks like the contacts have burnt out in it. So another £12 for a switch off ebay.:(
