Not sure if this has been mentioned before!

Just a quick add-on to threads ref Starter Motor Removal!

As we all know! Removal of the top Nut (I.e. the one you can't see! But can feel!!)

I did have a nightmare trying to remove mine last week, gave up on the day! As I was doing it at home! On the ground! Next day! Went to local garage to use their 'Pit' to try again!!! Half an hour later! Old one out!! New one in 👍💪😁

With a bit of 'Fetling' with an old Spanner (see attached pic) attached said spanner to Nut! Attached a bit of strapping to said Spanner! One quick tug of said strap!! And said Nut became loose enough for Thumb and Finger to unscrew and remove💪👍

Job done

Kev

Yep that nut is the true nut from hell, I detailed how to get to it and do it in my thread on all this, more complex method than yours but then mine was on extremely tight.
good on you!

@Stanleysteamer Yes I did read your one! Had real problems with the extension/s on Thursday, 4 1/2 hours 😪 😑 still no luck getting it off🥺

But I will go back to yours again! About reconditioning the old one if I can!!

Kev
That's the easy part!! the reconditioning.
But boy did you struggle if you spent 4 1/2 hours on it. sorry the thread wasn't more help. Maybe you sprayed it with easing juice and that eventually had an effect.
Anyway glad to be of some help and good luck with getting the job over and done with!!
:):):):)

Only struggled because of where I was! Laying under it!!!!
Next day was at the Pit! No easy juice used!
Did try the extension/s again! No luck!
Thinking head on!! Cut down 🔧 to fit 💪 🤪 🏆

Took the starter of my Defender yesterday, fitted a new kit and then faffed about for ages trying to fit the top nut. Dropped the nut and eventually found it sitting on the prop uj!
In the end I found that lying underneath, head first from the front, I could get my hand on the stud and fit the nut. It's so annoying to spend ages on something then it goes on easy.
Needless to say I wasn't to pleased to find the repair kit didn't fix my problem, new starter on order!

Still to start mine (At the weekend!) Hope to see something there!

Not worked on Defender! Only ''First Parades' when in the Army! But! If it went wrong!? We passed it over to 'Hammer and Spanner' detachment!😅🤣 located in the Tea Room with the MT Platoon!!

Don't think I put it in my thread, (did it so long ago I have forgotten) but once contact set fitted I did test the solenoid to see it clicked. As I knew the rest of the starter was working I didn't bother to test the whole thing, though that would not be hard.
Perhaps I ought to go back to the thread, if I can find it, and put that in at the end. ;) As it's such a fiddle to get it on and off.

I work on a gravel drive, and big gravel at that, so I am always a bit petrified at losing nuts etc. I do try to put tarp down.
In my case doing this job, I lost that bnut twice and each time it lodged in some other part of the Disco, once as per @Anaconda it stuck in the propshaft and the second time some part of the chassis.

Tis a reet beggar!

Had already used the hammer and block of wood trick to get it going for the Greenlane trip last weekend, didn't turn it off all day. Bad planning really as its covered in filth and so was I after removing the starter motor!

When mine went it just started refusing to start up when I turned the key to the third position.
I discovered I could persuade it to go by turning the key back to 0 then forward again, over and over again, finally it would catch and then started like a dream.
Hence I knew it was contacts to solenoid.

At least you managed to enjoy your greenlaning!!!;)
