Hello all, went to start car today 2.5dse auto and nothing. Dash lights all ok, battery new 3 months ago Yuasha 120ah. Turn key and I can hear a relay clicking, lights go out on gearbox along with the hevac display. Key fob has never worked for unlocking or locking doors (new battery fitted, not really worried about this) as key locks and unlocks ok. Also have a new battery and jump leads, tried this and still no joy. Tried jump lead from neutral to engine block, still nothing. I have noticed when I sit in car the led on the gearbox selector stays on but very dim. Checked relays, fuses etc all seem ok no melted parts or burning etc. Help needed as its snowing and I can't get out.

What year is it?

Guesses here until the gurus turn up ...

Sticky starter motor? Try tapping with a piece of wood?

Could it be loss of synch? I think the older cars turn over with loss of synch but I'm not sure if the younger ones do?

Check your battery connections are tight, cables to the starter motor likewise. Have a look at and clean your earth straps body to engine. Is it a relay clicking or the solenoid on top of the starter?

Hello Grrrrrr, year is 1996 (p reg), have not tried giving the motor a helping hand will try that tomorrow. The car was fine yesterday evening, has been cold but no trouble before when it was cold.

Hello tomcat, the clicking is a relay and not the starter motor solenoid. I will clean the terminals and check them tmorrow.

Check the starter relay if ok check connection of Brown/ red wire to spade connector on starter solenoid. Should be getting 12 volts to there when key is turned.

Hello wammers, is this in the main fuse box in engine bay, I have pulled all the relays in the box all look ok but have not swapped them around. will check starter tomorrow.

Yep relay 16, the yellow one immediately to the left of the black ABS relay.

I'm good mate, getting on top of these doors, what a tw&t of a job. Door frames need moding to fit the doors. Job wont look right if I cut and plane them. Just had a bath and settled with a large whiskey, happy days. Before you say it NO its not my birthday:D:D:D

I'm on royal Marine showers for the next week or so. Had an op on my back Thursday can't get dressing wet. It's a bit of a bugger stitches pulling like hell. Antibiotics aswell so can't have a JD. What a bugger. :D:D:D

Checked terminals, battery and starter all ok. put meter on starter solenoid with ignition OFF and there is 11.8 volts there, is that correct. Put meter on battery and its reading 12v approx, so something not right there. I tried jumping from another vehicle and nothing, although when I connect the jump leads to RR the doner vehicle tickover slows a bit due to load. I have noticed on the display "alarm fault" although this has appeared before with no consequences.

There should be no volt drop from the battery to the starter solenoid.
Battery should be reading more than 12.25 volts, preferably 12.5 to 12.7 volts. Check the earth from engine to chassis and the cables for corrosion inside the plastic sheath. Load on doner vehicle will be because your battery is flat. Does your alternator work?

Hello datatek, I will check battery volts again, don't seem to have a faulty alternator I suppose I can check this when it is going. As said new battery 3 months ago and a Yuasa one.

I disconnected neutral terminal and battery reads 12.3v, connect neutral back and it reads 11.9v. Will check earth straps on engine tomorrow.

Is the starter solenoid clicking? and is there a voltage drop when the ignition key is turned to start? I would suspect brushes in the starter motor worn from the symptoms you describe.
Or as there is only 12 v at the battery the battery is shot but then you should get the engine trying to turn over but all the lights should dim.
you say the there is a faint light on the gear change does it go out after a min or so? if not the becm is not going to sleep.
