ive got a 200 td disco engine in my 90 and the starter packed up i got a spare i think off the old engine any way. it looks like a hell of a job to get off to make it easier do you have to remove the manifold or can you do it without . any ideas welcome

Hi. I changed one on my 200Tdi, although this is a standard fit, not a disco conversion. I don't think it will be any different. No need to take of the manifold.
Work from the top and disconnect the downpipe from the manifold and push it out the way. Disconnect the wiring. You can then get at the starter top bolts using extension bars on your ratchet.
I then went underneath and undid the downpipe bolts and drop the downpipe out the way. You can get on the bottom bolt of the starter and once loose, push the starter up. Go back around to the top and lift it out.
I think this is how I did it, it was awhile ago. I also had to do it twice due to fitting a recon starter which was ****. Fitted a Bosch one in the end. Bit more money but means I won't be doing it again for a while.
Its a crap job................enjoy!!

I replaced mine a while ago without removing the turbo or any of the exhaust/manifold. Unfortunately it wasn't a conversion, so things may be different. I also can't remember how I did it, but I remember extensions, small spanners and hands, undoing the bolt from underneath and then some serious wiggling to get the starter out from above.

Absolutely no help at all I know, but just to say it is worth trying it without disassembling anything.
