Starter moter runs when key is out of ignition

Hi everyone,

I have not used my old disco tdi for a month, the battery was nearly flat and when I turned the key the starter moter barely turned so I took the key out of the ignition and the starter moter continued to turn but did not start the engine it sounded very week!!! A life of its own!!! So to cut the story short I trickle charged the battery for a few hours today reconecteted the battery and the starter moter began to turn again without the ignition turned on. I hear these cars have character but I'm a bit spooked, Any ideas??

Solinoid is stuck I imagine, pull the small spade connection off to check but if it still does it it's not the wiring but the solinoid
