hello guys, im looking at buying a freelander as my first family car, the one for sale has a start problem and only start with a bump start, i assume this could be just a starter motor problem or could it be something else? as i would just but one and fit it myself.

Thanks James

Best advice is to avoid it like the plague mainly due to the fact it is just a matter of time (not if) till the head gasket will let go as the k series engine had a major design fault and if its not the head gasket it will be the liners slipping.
If you really want a freelander then go for a TD4 of the range it has the least problems.

its just recently had a new head gasket water pump and radiator. my budget wont stretch to get a td4 as i would like one as im only twenty also i think insurance would be a bit troublesom, thats all thats wrong with it as its on a forcourt and they want it gone and is a cheap price, does has 125k on the clocks but see what happens

cheers james

K1.8 + 125k = run away, you WILL be plauged with problems, HGFs especially - as the liners slip further into the block the more HGFs you will get until eventually the block is knackered and you need a new engine.

As nath says, if you want a F/L shop about, go for an 'L' series doozel if you can't afford a TD4, not a 1.8 or a V6 - it will only end in tears if you go for a petrol.

Im only 17 and i have an L series doozle

My advice = Get an L series mate. Bullet proof Engine !

insurance is kind on the slow doozles lol

i see lol, can only find 5 td4's currently for sale and over 200 miles away and quite pricey, will keep looking, i would prefer desiel as running cost would be cheaper, will try, were can i find a good one for around 2k or under?

Best choice, go for the L series XDI (same as myne) or the XEDI.

Neither have turbo, so dont expect them to be fast, myne can happly cruise all day at 80 on the motorway with no problems. I think the L series is less prone to these problems due to the fact there simple "beefy" little engines.

Your best bet is to keep a lookout on ebay and loot. But be aware that the diesel L series even 10 years old still fetch over 2k.

You should be able to find a decent one. I have seen a couple on ebay the other day, have a look on there.

Good luck mate :)

thanks for the help, not bothered about it being turbo'd as i currently have a 200sx with some power on the back wheels but need to step away from that now and live properly now the little one is on its way. thanks again will have a nose.

yea, it looks a little battered about, but sadly thats what your going to get for your money really. you can easily fix these problems, as long as the engine and car is sound then that is all that really matters.

There is one listed on ebay as a buy it now and its at £3500 ! they still fetch good money lol

:D

is the L series that bad though? should last a while though i would of thought, is it just the engines that are the down fall on the petrols is it?

I thought all L-series diesels had a turbo? HOWARDO help out here you know best on this.

The guys here are right though, forget the petrols (horrendous unreliability even when supposedly sorted) & go for the L-series preferably with a fairly recent cambelt change unless you're good with the spanners. Your budget will find you a reasonable one as long as you're prepared to look around & be patient.
Also have a good search on here about the many possible problems with a Freelander so you can be better informed on what to check for.
Don't be put off though it's like every car there are good examples & bad examples. Forewarned is forearmed.

Good Luck & let us know how you get on.
