Hi Guys,

so the other morning there a started the car and then went to drive out and when i accelerated there was a squeeling noise. It happens when sitting in neutral and a rev the engine. It dissappears after the car has warmed up though. There doesnt appear to be any loss of performance or overheating or anything. It's not the fan belt either.

Any idea guys?

Cheers

Chris

Sorry forgot to say it is a p38 4.6 HSE.

It's usually the serpentine/aux belt slipping, because it is worn. The alternator is carrying a heavy electrical load as it recharges the battery after a cold start, this makes the alternator harder to turn and so the belt slips.

If it's a new belt and it is still slipping then I would suggest that you check the battery condition as it maybe that it is suffering a large voltage drop when starting the engine, which in turn give the alternator a large 'load', see above :)

cheers guys i'll let you know how i get on.

My Rangey is going into the garage on thursday to get the breaking problem sorted so i'll mention to the mechanic.

Could be that the water-pump bearings are on there way out; its normally the alternator causing a squuel like that, but water pump, when you blip the throttle can create a vacuum in the housing, that can make it 'stall' making the belt slip.

an old trick, try sticking a long screwdriver on each of the parts connected to the belt, put your ear on the other end and the noisiest part will probably be the culpret if its worn bearings. obviously if the belts shagged this wont help you much, and please dont put the screwdriver on the belt or you'll lose your ear!!!

belts are around 18 quid so its not really worth doing owt till you have replaced it.

having a similiar problem myself!!! i started getting the whining noise so i have done the following (fitted by myself??!! GULP!!):

  1. water pump - brand new £33
  2. serpentine belt - brand new £18
  3. air con compressor - 2nd hand - £35
  4. PAS pump - 2nd hand - £30
all fitted but still a noise when accelerating? so going in for MOT tomorrow so going to get them to have a look for me to make sure i have done everything right but i think it might be the alternator. again no overheating etc as previously mentioned by chrispiec. if it is not the alternator then i am stumped on what it could be?!!

Hi Flanders7,

do you get the noise when in neutral too? I have to say that it's worse when i'm taking off in gear but even worse when i'm reversing.

Coud it be a transmission problem?

I'm beginning to regret buying my p38. :(

chrispiec,

well it does it all the time now really hacking me off!!!! just had the MOT passed with no worries. I asked the garage to check my work and they said spot on and they would of done exactly what i have done - they agreed it be the alternator and to try it as it is the only thing left to do.

it is so embarrassing while driving as it is so loud. the agarge said that because i have used 2 part second hand parts it is difficult to eliminate them as a problem.

Also does anyone know which alternator i need for my P reg 1997 4.6 HSE LPG rangey? i have been told a 100amp one based on my vehicle but on the island-4x4.co.uk they say advertise that i should have a 120 amp one as i have a heated front screen. i had a look at the label but not clear but think says 100A. i want to order one tonight so i can fit ASAP then i can wash the motor again and be proud!!!!!
