My defender is making a squeaking noise when you are driving and when you come off the throttle it goes and comes back when you put foot on throttle again hope its nothing to do with gearbox.

I had that once. One of the UJ's had fallen apart and the squeeking was where the prop and the UJ flange thingy were grinding gauges in each other.

I'd suggest taking a look at them and changing all of them if need be. Also, as the price difference isn't much, go for OEM rather than cheapo ones if you can afford it.

Two 9/16 spanners (or one and the special thin walled long socket) and a grease gun full of grease, A club hammer, and possibly an old socket and a vice would be handy.

Buster has a thread on here of exactly what to do.

Cheers guys and thats what im thinking stu with gearboxes its just as your go faster the noise gets faster is doin my nut in will look at ujs.

fyi, Hardy Spicer/GKN are good ujs

Just doing mine atm, mine are really corroded in. even the circlips snapped due to the rust.

Got the circlips off but the ujs are stuck on and tried a vice+socket, different hammers, plusgas and heat but the buggers wont move.

I'm just waiting to pick up an angle grinder disc to cut them out. You can also get a propshaft tool for helping to get them out, bearmach ba 3138 for the 1/2 drive

Just take your prop to local garage and ask them to press it out for you. I had to use my mates press other week took 15 tonne before it went pop. **** myself when it went bang lol
