My mrs owns and runs a world wide animal help & rescue site and is heavily involved with Spaniels etc due to her links with other site owners and rescuers who specialize in Spaniels.

If you don't mind homing a rescue pup as opposed to supporting a typical puppy farm - drop me a PM.

I've had springers all my life - currently just 2, Jack (9) and Dexter (4).
I train and work them for shooting and it is essential for the wellbeing of the dog that their tails are docked. The skin on their tails is thin and when working their tails go 10 to the dozen. If they're not docked, the tails get ripped to shreds on the brambles.
It is legal for their tails to be docked provided it is done by a vet, who will require evidence that the pups are bred for working (even if they don't actually end up in a working home). The breeder should have a certificate from the vet proving that they have been docked legally.

If you are looking to get one as a pet, I would go for an undocked one, without too many FTCh's in the breeding. That way you're less likely to get a "hot" one that's too hyper for a non-working home.

They love lots of exercise, but it's not true that they must have lots.
Mine get 2 45min runs every day and that keeps them fit enough to work all day in the shooting season.

They're cheap to run too - I feed mine on Dr John Silver at £9.99 for 15Kg and they thrive on it. They also have few genetic problems.

Keep the hair on their ears trimmed and you should have no problems.

Apart from 2 mugs full of Dr John Silver per day, the only other stuff that they have is half a teaspoon of cod liver oil (for their coat and joints) and a raw carrot (for their teeth) per day.
[When they're working hard, I give them Dr John Gold, but that's too high in protein for everyday use].

Their weight is perfect (25Kg), their coats glossy and their teeth nice and clean.
When I take them to the vet for their annual booster, he always complements me on their condition.

you talking about your dogs ...................... or ya missus :D:D:D

Funny Trewey said about the raw carrot, I give mine big chunky raw carrots, also the stumps out of cauliflower and cabbages for their teeth.
If you intend t work I would have a docked one, the sight of a working spaniel that has caught its tail on a thorn or something and has wagged a hot bleeding tail over it;s body, looks like someone has tried stabbing it to death.
A springer is very biddable and trainable, to a whistle, hand or voice commands, but I preferred to have a puppy from the off

I've 2 working dogs, a Springer and a Labrador.

I would be totally lost without the Spaniel. I can take it beating, picking-up or dogging-in. He jumps out the Landy and just knows what job he is there to do.
The Missus can take him for a walk with the kids, and he will just walk nicely to heal on the lead with my 5 yo daughter.
The Lab is good too, just not a "bright".

The Spaniel has a docked tail. Just the last two "didgits", and that is fine for him, he's never cut it or caught it on anything, Whereas the Lab has caught his loads of times.

My advice would be to get one that has been Game-keeper bred rather than "trials" bred, as they seem to be in my experience, slightly calmer (for a Springer!).

Also, training is an absolute must.
