Ok so the family have decided were in a good position to offer a dog a good loving home
2 friends have spaniels and weve decided on a springer spaniel pup
Done lots of reading up and we understand theese dogs are very energetic and were primarily working dogs

Lots weve seen for sale come with the relevant papers and microchipped etc
Some have the tails chopped some dont is there a reason to go for one or the other?
Can anyone who has springers or has experience with them offer any help ir advise or when we should be buying from

We have a cocker spaniel, and the tail situation is the same, when used as gun dog it keeps tangle free ( although you'll never keep their ears free of burrs, teasels, grass darts etc, etc) I'm sure someone else will have something to add....

great dogs , ad them all me life , and me mum and dad has, they do suffer with there ears, and in later life , they also are prone to warts , mine is now 8 years old , and in the past year he has grown around 20 of them , they can be removed , but they come back.. like you say they need plenty of walks , like any dog , and some can be over active , go for it , there a great loving dog ... ye tail docking is banned now.
 
The tails get chopped for aesthetic reasons and depends entirely on the sensibility of the breeder and the market the dogs are bred for.
I know I'm very repetitive but if you can, get an adult dog from a shelter. Most dogs end up in shelters because of human ignorance or indifference not because they have behaviour problems. If you decide to adopt an adult, ask to go through a pre-adoption process where you get to socialise with the dog before you take it home and that way you can be 99% certain the dog doesn't have behavioural problems.
The advantage of an adult dog is what you see is what you get and they are usually already housetrained.

Do they suffer from malting? My sisters labrador malts all the time and it drives her crazy

We would prefer to have a puppy and raise it our way not how its been raised by another family
Were in it for the long term commitment so thats not an issue
 
Springer spaniels are a wonderful breed. They have the advantage of not being in fashion, still considered a working dog and therefore the breed has been buggered around with less than others. We homed one recently, an absolute babe :)

Always had rescued dogs.......usually plenty of pups available as well if that's what you'd prefer. I've never had a behavior problem that couldn't be dealt with.......with a dog that is.......different story altogether for myself :eek:;)

The wonderful thing about dogs is their adaptability and the great thing about shelter dogs is that they know all too well just how ****ty life can be and usually form a very strong bond with their new family and do everything they can to fit in. All that stuff about raising a dog from a pup so they turn out the way you want is rubbish! I have a 16 year old Breton-mix I adopted two years ago after he'd spent twelve years of his life in a ****hole of a shelter and he's definitely given me much less grief than my other two I've had since pups.
Keep an open mind and have a trawl through your local shelters, you'll be surprised at the amazing dogs waiting for someone special to 'discover' them.
If you pm me I can give you the name of a friend involved in rescue from the Bristol area who may be able to help.
Puppies always find a home, unwanted adult dogs get put to sleep by most local authorities in England.
